When Can I Stop Taking Them?

It is normal to want to come off your antidepressant when you start to feel well. But it is best to keep on it for at least six months, even if you feel better. This helps your chances of staying well.

When might it be more than six months?

  • If you are over 65.
  • If you have had depression in the past. If so, it can help to take your antidepressant for 1-2 years after you feel better.
  • If you have a depression that keeps coming back. Your GP might suggest taking your antidepressant for more than 2 years.
