Side Effects

I had quite bad nausea at first but it passed quite quickly. Then I had a real racing feeling for a few days, after about 10 days of taking them, but this too passed. I started them this time along with a stress class and a therapist.

Like any tablets you take, there can be side effects. These often happen in the first two weeks. These will be listed in the sheet that comes with your medicine. The most common side effects are listed first. This is often a long list, but that doesn’t mean you will have them all. Some of the more common ones are:

  • Reduced appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Being sick
  • Feeling sick
  • Sore or upset stomach
  • Heartburn
  • Diarrhoea
  • Feeling tired
  • Sleep problems
  • Less able to reach orgasm
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling agitated
  • Feeling anxious

Most people find these tail off after the first two weeks. But some people want to stop taking their tablets in the first few days due to them.

If you have side effects, try to stick with your tablets for a few weeks. The side effects do tend to pass. You might feel a bit worse before you start to feel better.

If your antidepressant is still not helping after 6 weeks, or if the side effects are too much, have a word with your GP.

Impact on your health:

For some diabetics, starting an antidepressant can affect your sugar control. This is more of problem if you use insulin. You may need to monitor your blood sugar more closely when starting an antidepressant.
