How Do Antidepressants Work?

One way they are thought to work is by increasing the chemical messengers in the brain. These messengers, such as serotonin and noradrenaline, are important in how we feel and think. When we are depressed, it is thought these may not work as well.

It is not clear yet if depression causes a drop in chemical messengers or if depression is caused by this drop. Either way, it is thought that antidepressants boost the messengers. This then leads to a change for the better in people’s mood.

Antidepressants have also been found to help other things, like pain, anxiety and eating problems. They work in different ways to help these problems.
